WEST CALGARY HOUSE LEAGUE (WCHL) INFORMATION
NOVICE, ATOM AND PEE WEE HOUSE LEAGUE 2019-2020 SEASON
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Registration for West Calgary House League opens on July 1, 2019.
The West Calgary House League is part of Hockey Calgary and is comprised of teams from TWHA, Glenlake Minor Hockey Club and Springbank Minor Hockey Association.
Philosophy - The purpose of house league is to provide recreational players the opportunity to play organized hockey in an environment that is affordable, fun, and safe with moderate time commitments allowing for participation in other social, academic or recreational activities. It also provides a less intimidating and competitive format for players with limited skills and knowledge of hockey.
While House League emphasizes fun hockey with no statistics or standings, skill development is still provided by certified volunteer parent coaches and games are played with certified officials. There are fewer ice times on mostly fixed dates and times and less travel. All teams play in one division and are equally balanced with a variety of skill levels. The season runs from October to February with evaluations usually the last weekend of September ending at the end of February. All teams have one practice and one game per week. Practice schedules are fixed as much as available ice will allow and game schedules released with as much advanced notice as possible so families have reasonable knowledge of how their schedule will look. Teams are not permitted to play games or participate in tournaments outside their league or purchase additional ice for practices. There are no cash calls or fundraising permitted. As demand for this program is high, registration is on a first come basis with a maximum number of players allowed for the entire house league so register early. Every registered player is required to have a valid Respect in Sport – Parent certification.
It is essential that parents step up to volunteer for the various roles required to run the league smoothly. These roles include, but are not limited to, coaches, on ice volunteers and team managers. Without enough volunteers, we will not be able to continue to run the league.
New for 2019-2020 Season
This is a very exciting season coming up! The West Calgary House League has been running as three separate associations since inception. The upcoming season marks a change to the operations and administration of the WCHL whereby it will now be amalgamated with the three associations. Players will continue to register with their Hockey Calgary designated association according to residency within association boundaries, however, teams will now be formed with players and coaches from all three associations. This change will allow more teams in the WCHL with better balanced and competitive teams across the league. Communication will be more WCHL specific although families will still receive their individual association’s general communications.
As part of this amalgamation, we have worked closely with Hockey Calgary to secure ice at George Blundun/Optimist arenas for WCHL practices and games. This location is central to all three associations to assist with reducing travel time for families during the season. The exception to this will be Atom games as we were unable to secure ice on Sunday so they will rotate through various arenas of Glenlake, Springbank and Trails West. Note that PeeWee games are scheduled on Saturday.
Fees - $725 Note a late fee of $100 will be applied to registrations after August 1
Game Jerseys – WCHL game jerseys are sponsored by the Calgary Flames every other year and supplied by the associations for the other year and players may keep their jerseys every season.

We will do our best to accommodate every request, however, there is no guarantee as our priority is to make sure that the teams are balanced in both players and coaches for a fair and even season.
Coaches for House League are required to have the same coach qualifications as regular stream. Note, this means that Checking Skills will be required for Atom and PeeWee Head Coaches.
Respect in Sport - Parent
Hockey Alberta has instituted mandatory RIS Parent program with the goal to educate our membership for all new families to Hockey Calgary. Re-certification for current families will be required every 4 years. This means that anybody having taken the course in 2015 or earlier will be required to recertify for the upcoming season. Players will not be placed on teams for the 2019-2020 season until RIS re-certification has been completed
