U11

U11 Hockey is Calgary’s next-level program for 9- and 10-year-olds, focusing on refining skills, introducing team tactics, fair ice time, and full-ice play in a fun, developmental environment.

The U11 program bridges the gap between the introductory U7/U9 model and the more competitive U13 division. The core focus is on fair and equal ice time, skill development, and introducing full-ice hockey while building well-rounded hockey IQ.

Program details

  • Played on full ice with standard rules (off-sides, icing, formal penalties).
  • Players rotate through all positions (forward and defense) to gain balanced experience, except designated full-time goalies.
  • Two goalie options available:
    • Full-time Goalie – Remains in net all season (must supply own goalie equipment).
    • Hybrid Goalie Program – Rotates between goalie and out-player positions (must supply own goalie equipment).
U9–U11 players and families can choose between the Glenlake Community Stream or the West Calgary House League.

Evaluations & Team Formation

  • Evaluations usually begin after the Labour Day long weekend (late August or early September).
  • Players must attend all assigned sessions (typically 5–6).
  • Teams are tiered (AA through Tier 5) based on evaluation performance.
  • Most tiers have two “sister teams,” except AA (usually one team).
  • Friend requests cannot be accommodated due to tiered placement.

Practice Schedule

  • Practices vary week to week, typically 1.5–2 hours per week.
  • Weekday practices can start as early as 4:00 pm.
  • Weekend practices are usually in the mornings (as early as 6:30 am in some cases).
  • Ice curfew is 8:45 pm.
  • Teams normally share the ice with one other U11 team.

Games & Tournaments

  • Games are scheduled “one for one” (one weekday + one weekend game).
  • U11 teams (except AA) play in the South quadrant to reduce travel time.
  • Games are officiated by referees-in-training.
  • Tournaments are arranged at the team level.

Team Cash Calls

Teams may request a cash call (typically $200–$350 to a maximum of $500 per player) at the beginning of the season to cover additional expenses such as tournaments, dryland training, team apparel, and equipment.
